I just read an article about why we make music. It was great! And here’s my summary.
Music is good for us. It’s good for our brains. It’s good for our souls…spiritual. It is the first medium we seem to turn to as humans in time of trouble. Think of the Covid-19 pandemic as it hit Italy initially. All the opera singers were serenading their neighbors from their balconies.
Music sends a message. It speaks to us. It can change your mood. Music can make you cry or laugh out loud! Music sends us on journeys. We see other countries, other time periods…Ancient Times, Middle Ages, etc. Music can be atonal (not melodic as we are used to) and sound very strange…make you wonder what’s happening.
Add the voice and music literally tells a story. It gets even more personal. Now the music is talking to us in words not just notes. Music depicts the seasons during the year…Christmas, Easter, etc. Music is like blood to us. It flows in and out. It’s more essential to our well-being than we think.
For us professional musicians music is who we are. We have to make music no matter how big or small. And we make it our entire lives. And we spend thousands of hours and many many years training so that the music we make is superb! Show me one musician who ever retires. Maybe we slow down a bit but we still do it until the end.
So there you have it. Music is life. Let’s not forget that. Maybe we don’t think about it as such even us professionals. But thank God we have the author who wrote the article I read and myself, and countless others to remind us.
